Why would Detroit ever start mass producing economy cars when the rich won't buy them. As long as the ultra rich like Kerry continue to use private jets (and high profit gas guzzling SUV's) that use more fuel and and create more pollution in one hour of use than what a Hummer does in one year, Detroit is going to produce high profit, gas guzzlers, that the ultra rich love to use! Kerry uses more fossil fuel in a year in his privately owned jets and yacth than most small communities use in a year.

Ford
Pinto, Escort, Mustang (4 cyl), Festiva, Tracer,

GM
Chevette, Cavalier, Geo Metro and any other Geo, Saturn

Chrysler
Neon, K cars, Onmi ,

I know there are lots of others, thats just off the top of my head.

If you look at the current crop of S.U.V.s they are nothing but an "end-around" to sell people the old big gas guzzling cars that were being sold before the advent of the E.P.A.

Those aren't economy cars-those are disasters!

Will Detroit ever come up with economy cars? One says NO, and the other says YES. Of course, both are correct! What? Well, think of it this way--it's the economy of sales--stupid. That's not a dig at you, but a little twist on our American ethos taken from the Bush/Clinton race. When gas was prohibitively expensive for larger cars (ala 1970s gas crisis etc....) public transportation was increasingly used and less efficient cars were not purchased. Simply, the car manufacturers made more efficient ECONOMY CARS to satisfy the profit motive profit. There is no morality of value for service or purchase or a concern for our global ecology--give me a flipping break. Hell, my Father --now deceased-- was a Corporate Vice President for a billion dollar company as well as an engineer, and my Grandfather was the chief financial analyst/invester for one of if not thee wealthiest family in a midwestern state. Of all that I learned from these men, I will share two things.
FIRST, my Father, who designed and sold electric motors such as in your washing machine or vacuum cleaner designed stuff with "planned obsolescence. " His and other engineers’ best efforts were nixed. Simply, if it was designed to last, they couldn't sell you more of the same," and no pool of investors would go for that. I had prototypes of efficient engines downstairs in my bedroom that would last forever, but you will never see such. NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!

SECOND, here comes the lesson from my Grandfather. While the people who created businesses may be moral and visionary, there children are rarely so. That “last forever engine” above is simply less profit for spoiled children that never scratched at the dirt, and who don't have any connection or concern for you mere workaday mortals. There accountants will nix that "great invention." Watch MEL BROOK'S HISTORY OF THE WORLD, that is, where guys say "fuck the poor." Well, we might not be that poor anymore, but this spirit still exists, as does P.T. Barnum’s---throughout business.

The sad part is that if we produce quality things that meet our needs that last, we can go onto higher pursuits. OH, but we can’t have that!

OH, I usually don't swear, but this time I'll even add "I SHIT YOU NOT."

All SUV's are are pickup truck chassis with a luxury passenger body installed.
