Warming hits 'tipping point'

Warming hits 'tipping point'

Siberia feels the heat It's a frozen peat bog the size of France and Germany combined, contains billions of tonnes of greenhouse gas and, for the first time since the ice age, it is melting

Ian Sample, science correspondent
Thursday August 11, 2005
The Guardian

A vast expanse of western Sibera is undergoing an unprecedented thaw that could dramatically increase the rate of global warming, climate scientists warn today.

Researchers who have recently returned from the region found that an area of permafrost spanning a million square kilometres - the size of France and Germany combined - has started to melt for the first time since it formed 11,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age.

Article continues
The area, which covers the entire sub-Arctic region of western Siberia, is the world's largest frozen peat bog and scientists fear that as it thaws, it will release billions of tonnes of methane, a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere.

The Domino Effect of Green House Summer. The "tipping point" a nice phrase that means what exactly?

Comments, questions, debate, slander, name calling, all welcomed.

As my source said years ago we already reached a critical amount of green houses gasses in the atmosphere a few of those gasses stay up in the air for 100 +/- years. Everything and anything we have dumped to date in the form of say Carbon gasses will stay in the air for about 100 years (as one example).

That means that even if we stopped producing green houses gasses, we still have the mess of gasses in the atmosphere to deal with that are already there.

With Siberia melting and about to dump even more green house gasses, this means that we are entering into a period of accelerating global warming. It is the domino effect, no matter who started it, it is started and more and more dominos are falling, adding to the problem.

Again I throw out there that things are going to happen a lot faster than reported 2-5 years ago. In fact they are going faster than what is reported now. The seriousness of the Siberia Permafrost Melt is being under estimated – under reported. The Article says 100 years, try 30 to 50.

These researchers are not looking farther than Siberia, they are not including the plankton that are dying off, the melting of Alaska permafrost (which will to add to the problem) Deforestation of the Tropics, blah. All of these factors are feeding off each other, and speeding up the process.

Tipping point – the breaking point if you will, how about the Point of No Return – All are applicable.

Wow, It hought that something like this would turn a few heads.

Oh, that;s right ,we are busily attacking each other to pay attention to the issues esculating around us.

We got them exactly where they want us.

David It's Important That You Have made The Connection ..........That Most People Haven't yet.....

Spread This Information to The Four Corner's Of The Globe........

Not Only Is It Your Duty As A Human Being.......But It Is Your Responsibility...... Because You Know .

Just As It Is Mine.....And Everyone Elses Whom Have Connected the Dots........

There Is A War Currently Being waged On The Net David,And That's Why There Is All Of This Argument among us........

But Do Not for one second think that we are not aware of the escelating events surrounding us Daily......

Dave,

All of us oldtimers here, have been on the global warming trail for months and years before you arrived. Your Siberian permafrost is not even a new article to our forum.

We know what the problems are and the debate whether the warming happened before and is happening again as a solar/terrestrial/ cyclic event continues along with the glaring fact of increased human/contributed greenhouse gases from actually producing GG to reducing of various carbon sinks. And only a fraction of the harmful GGs stay in the upper Stratosphere for 100s of years affecting the ozone. The Montreal Protocol helped immensely in curtailing those chemicals.

You come here and act as though you're the only one who's discovered anything or discussed anything here when for many, many months even a couple of years (if not three)we've been posting about the situation and researching it.

What can we do other than support research, state programs, national awareness, education, live our own lives resposibly, and invest (if we are so fortunate) in alternative energies? We send links and articles to friends and I'm sure awareness has expanded over the years. Certainly the issue of global warming itself has taken on national and international political relevance and importance.

Gloom and doom is not my bag. What do you want, Dave, every poster to freak out and just give up on life? We have children and families and grandchildren in the future and we choose hope and innovative adaptation NOT end-of-the-world scenarios.

Get a grip and be part of the organizations and people who will make a difference in this transition and adaptation. Yes, keep spreading the news and be part of the education phalanx, but don't whine and criticise us, we who have contributed to the effort in the past. Post up in the "current events" if you want more attention! I've seen you up there!

Keep up the POSITIVE work !

;)

There was no "source". What David claimed was written by an anonymous "deep shield" was a fabrication by Stewart himself. Though written in the first person, and claimed to have been emailed, it was shown to contain passages ripped directly from more than one internet glossary. Confronted by this fact, David G. stewrt admitted he had written the text himself.

Stewart was exposed as a liar, and subsequently, as habitual liars must do, he was forced to fabricate another tale in which the still anonymous "source" died. No such "source" will ever be identified, even though, according to Stewart, the earth is doomed.

Jay, I hear ya, thanks! ;)

Even without the background, the picture is clear!

What do you mean by this, Boomer Chick??

David Stewart was at this forum long before 'old-timers' like you ever came here. He was driven away by Reynolds' gay-baiting and psychological terrorism. Recently he came back to try again.

You owe all people of integrity here an explanation of why you do not co-operate in marginalizing Reynolds, ET, Yaak and company. Do they contribute anything towards the goal of making best use of the human resources we have at our disposal at this forum??

Does the gathering of information in itself move us in the direction of solving our problems?

Reynolds even recently defended the practices at Guantanamo. You found that hard to swallow, but finally you did swallow it, even that.

You have no self-respect. You have a passive attitude of researching, researching, researching, and at the same time waiting for America's criminal elites to do your political work for you.

You can't win e.g. Arianna Huffington over to your/our priorities, so you decide to make her agenda your agenda. (I am not insinuating that Arianna Huffington is a criminal.)

David Stewart will not approve of my starting an argument with you and calling you names but really, you are faced with the choice of taking sides between Stewart and Reynolds, when Reynolds serves you his crap about Stewart being a hoaxer, etc. etc., and you side with the hoaxer Reynolds. You are pathetic.

And don't start telling me now that I don't and can't know that Stewart is not a hoaxer. That is gutlessness. Other otherwise significant people like Chem 11 have manifested the same
kind of gutlessness, and Reynolds prides himself on that.

Boomer Chick, explain what you mean when you say the picture is clear?? What picture, and how is it clear??

Wayne, your right, I do not approve.

But hell, it doesn’t matter – nothing we say is being understood, nothing we say is making any positive changes. Least ways not on these boards.

* * *

BoomerChick, I've been a member here since Sept 2004, you have been here since Jan 2005 - Technically I'm an old timer compared to you. ;) I was actually haunting the boards without posting for a few months before I registered to post.

Granted I do not post as often as you (2,337 posts)
Or Jay (1,609)
Or Milkman (1,295)
Or Wayne (1,886)

My (196) piddling posts most likely has me regulated to Lurker status. I am also a member of other CTC and Climate Change boards/forums – not all under the same Dvgstwrt name either – And I have a record low number of posts on those sites as well – I read, and weight what is written, click links, study. I’m listening – mostly.

Those numbers are revealing of my nature.

* * *

Jay – your interpretation, again you do not possess all the facts. However with your record of personal attacks on all of these boards I figure you can’t help but lump everyone together into one pile. More of a knee-jerk reaction to attack everyone instead of discuss each situation individually. Of course if I was in your position, surrounded by a lot of people saying one thing which “I know for a fact” can’t be true, I would be defensive and offensive to every individual and unable to listen and accept that one or more might have something more to say.

I understand were you are coming from.

I did attempt to discuss (without you calling me ‘fag-boy’, without all of the drama and others putting their two cents worth) the matter with you but you did not want to. I answered you copy and pasted questions that you asked dozens of times, and you continued to rage on about my sexuality, and other things. You did not even acknowledge that I did answer your questions.

None of that was an attack either Jay, an observation. Nothing more.
