With the widespread proliferation of virus's and spy-ware that seem to attack our beloved pieces of electronic junk called "computers" every day, it's amazing that they seem to continue to work for us.

There are several good "virus protection" programs out there. The one I use is McAfee, but I don't allow it to simply "sit there". At least once a month, I set it in motion for a complete scan of all of the folders and sub-folders on the machine.

A couple of years ago, I downloaded and began using two specific "freeware" programs. To give credit where credit is due, one of them was suggested in a post from kentay.

They are...

Spyware Blaster...available at http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/
Spybot Search and Destroy...available at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html

Though they are "freeware" they accept donations (recommended). Using them together provides a remarkably good shield against infestations of spyware. In my view, at least, "Spyware" is almost as insidious as a virus, since soon you can find your computer deluged with "popups" and email from advertisers who've gained a foothold by the installation of micro-programs reporting your computer use and browsing habits to advertising firms.

The bottom line?

Though some may have "regimes" at least as complete as mine (or even better) here's what I do on a regular basis...(I use Windows 98SE, incidentally)

Disk "Clean up" and "Scan Disk" from the program "Start" menu once a day.
Disk Defragmenter every third day
A session with both Spyware Blaster and Spybot every two weeks
A total system scan with McAfee every month (it takes well over an hour)

One specific precaution that I observe pretty scrupulously...
When I receive attachments in email, if I don't know the poster, they're discarded, period.
If I do know the poster, and generally trust him/her, rather than opening the attachment I save it to a folder I've established for the purpose, and use a McAfee scan of that specific folder before opening it. That scan takes only a few seconds.

The result? (Fingers crossed, here) The machine remains "clean" month after month.

Tailor the above to fit your own needs, but it works.

We used to kill spies and deserters. I think I'd have to take the deserters on a case by case basis but a spy? What defense could a spy offer?

I run Mepis Linux, and have been running some other Linux distribution prior to that for at least 3 years now. I have never had a problem with a virus on my computer. For the most part Linux is immune from viruses because the machines are in general far more secure than Windows machines. It doesn't surprise me the corporate licking Reepercons continue to use expensive, yet poor performing software when there are in fact very viable alternatives out there. When it comes to choice, the Creepers choose the worst out of force of habit.

www.mepis.org<chuckle> While I totally understand that machines running Linux avoid the virus problems of Windows, my machine is six (count 'em) years old and really Linux wasn't readily available in 1998.

Linux doesn't (to my knowledge, at least) prevent spyware from gaining access.

Curiosity drives this question...Why do you feel every issue addressed has to bring out "corporate licking Reepercon" comments?

Why do you feel every issue addressed has to bring out "corporate licking Reepercon" comments?

Clearly this issue does because it is posted by a corporate licking Reepercon (Mike) and it addresses an issue which is caused by a Reepercon corporation (M$) making huge profits off of everyone else's collective misery.

Moreover instead of offering a solution that addresses the problem vis a vis a low cost effective alternative, you offer up a solution which is 4 more years of the SOS. (Same Old Shit)

microsoft has released their own spy/adware protection tool for free download. It actually got a very good rating as well. Search around for it at www.microsoft.com.

I run windowsXP for my programming work (because I do windows programming), and freebsd at other times. Linux and BSD are making great progress.

Jitoen, you might want to find out how many of your own brethren here use some edition of Windows before waxing eloquently about what a bright guy you are...and how dumb conservatives are.

And yet Bill Gates is a DEMOCRAT. Someone may want to get Jito into the loop.

This will work: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/Looks (at least) like a good program...home use $39.95. Spyware Blaster is still (I like this price) free, though I've sent them a donation that almost -- but not quite -- puts it in the same ballpark..

PS Jitoen is always in the loop...complete with swastika...
