View Full Version : Empty the Cup

If you have cup that is full of stale water, and you pour into it fresh water, what happens? Fresh water spills out over top of cup, and stale water at bottom remains.

It seems most, if not all posters to discussion forum already know everything they are knowing. Knowing all you are knowing leaves no room for learning. Every morning, wake up and know nothing. Look at world with eyes of newborn baby. What is this? Why is that?

Knowing all you are knowing is big mistake. Every morning, I know nothing. By bedtime, I already know far too much. Lucky for me sleep cycle begins whole pattern again, and every day is new day! Empty the cup. Leave room for fresh water. Fresh water is most refreshing. Aaaah! :)

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.

And now we have all had good laugh, and shared funny jokes. But point remains! Rebirth of self is cleansing and surprisingly efficient. I will hope in times to come, others can speak of own experiences in this matter.

I will eat Lutefisk to show politeness to host. I have not found other reason to do this. Here is more useful recipe for time of Holiday:

Köttbullar

Unlike large meatballs in sweet and sour sauce which are often called Swedish by person who knows little of Sweden, genuine köttbullar are small meatballs served with alone or with thin pan gravy and traditionally accompanied by tart, red lingonberries or lingonberry preserves. Preserves are better, I think.

Serves 4 to 6; Yields two to three dozen meatballs

1/3 cup finely-ground plain breadcrumbs
1/3 cup milk (skim, okay)
1 small yellow onion
1 egg (or egg white)
1 and 1/3 pounds lean ground beef
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1 tablespoon butter and 1 tablespoon canola oil

For pan gravy:
Butter as needed, up to 1 tablespoon
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 cup beef stock

Lingonberry preserves.

Soak bread crumbs in milk for 5 to10 minutes until liquid is absorbed. Peel and quarter onion. Finely dice onion. Add egg, meat, soaked bread crumbs and seasonings. Pulse until thoroughly blended.

Shape meat mixture into small balls, less than inch in diameter; if the mixture sticks to hands, wet them with cold water. Heat the frying pan and add butter and oil. Saute meatballs in 2 or 3 batches, shaking pan frequently to keep meatballs from sticking. Drain on paper towels and keep warm.

Alternatively, meatballs can be placed on greased or non-stick broiler pan or rimmed cookie sheet. Broil for several minutes, then drain on paper towels. Use other, deeper pan for gravy. To make pan gravy, scrape off and discard any browned bits of meat that may be sticking to pan after meatballs are done. (If less than 1 Tablespoon fat remaining in pan, add butter to compensate.) Add flour, stirring with fork until brown. Quickly add stock and bring to boil, stirring constantly with fork or whisk, until gravy thickens. Remove from heat and serve immediately with meatballs.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here is recipe requested by Ellena:

You will need:

1/2 cup red wine
1/2 cup port
1/4 cup vodka
1 pinch cardamom
peel of one small orange
3 cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1/3 cup blanched almonds
1/3 cup gold raisins
sugar to taste

Mix together wine, raisins, almonds and spices. Let mixture steep at room temperature for several hours, up to 24 hours, no more!

When ready, heat over low heat until steam begins to rise. Do not boil!

Turn off heat and add vodka, port, and sugar to taste. If you oversweeten, don’t fear! Simply add small amounts of wine until perfect.

Ladle glogg over almonds and raisins in mug and enjoy!

TPR: Being open is important!

YET, the mind is not a cup of fixed size. And, both a cup --and you-- can not be empty even if you try. However, you can possibly suspend preconception or focus so hard that you are 'more' in the now and with the item of focus. And, it is amazing what a man can learn in a day, but sometimes a single correct thought is equivelent in value to half a lifetime of experience--for that person. And, past learning does not necessarily prohibit or squeeze out future learning. In fact, given the memory peg way we form associations to make sense out of the world, without past learning we can't find significance, or are the only building blocks occurring in our REM sleep? I think NOT!
However, Ingrid, I wish you would expand upon old sayings, and share why they are significant. Asphorisms and the like often are both profound and of little utility--or lesser utility than if expounded being expanded.

And then there is such thing as to be too practical. :) Empty cup saying is not just saying. All wisdom cannot be found through only logic alone. I am most empatically not speaking only of head containing too much knowledge, and now there is no room for more! This is absurdly simplistic way of viewing what has been said. Perhaps you are fooling self that this is interpretation you have made, but if so, this is very sad thing indeed. Point is that we think we know sometimes things that we could not know; "knowing" these things stands in way of learning truth. This is something child can understand. Empty cup saying appears to apply to you most of all! Letting go of self-importance is big part of emptying cup.

Did you know that ANDY Jackson killed just about every Florida Seminole Indian and then adopted a kid to placate his conscience. And even so, his words above remain wise. See, its the value of the words and not who spoke them. Man just doesn't get this--even today.

ADDED: The crux is living up to good words. (See: Star Trek: Wrath of Khan.)

Ingrid, how very Zen of you.

A visitor arrived inquiring about Zen. Master Nan-in silently poured him a cup of tea and continued pouring until the cup overflowed. "Why do you continue to pour after the cup is full?" asked the visitor. "To show you," replied Nan-in, "that you are like this cup: so full of your own preconceptions that nothing can go in. I can't tell you about Zen until you have emptied your cup."

TPR and Hooligan agree that The Stalker is a woman and that they will keep each other posted. TPR confides in April that he and Hooligan think the suspect is female. April wants to go to the police but TPR intends to take care of the suspect himself. April feels the killer growing restless and believes that "she" will strike again. Later, April goes to Ellena's house and slips into a trance. Ingrid arrives and pulls her out of it. April says she saw two piercing yellow eyes.

TPR faces off with his Japanese Zen Master, who gives the Count a tiger's tooth and claw. April visits TPR and he shows her his "weapons." She realizes the yellow eyes she saw were those of a tiger.

Madres confesses to Mike that he feels someone is following him. Kentays name comes up and Madres realizes the girl he chased out of the police department looked a lot like Kentay. Mike tells Madres he thinks that his parents' love and future together may truly be in jeopardy.

Madres learns from Jack that Ingrid testified on TPR's behalf and that he is free. Madres tells Fritz and he gets infuriated. He wants to stop TPR. As they leave the loft TPR arrives, extending an olive branch, but it is no use. Fritz claims the Fair and Balanced name and renounces the Who Cares, even handing TPR all his credit cards. Outside, TPR looks at the instructions from xfiler and muses that Fritz doesn't realize what a big mistake he has just made. The kids are proud of Fritz and he and Madres bury the hatchet. Later, Fritz gets another headache and Bubba thinks it could be a signal that the killer is going to strike again.
