A MESSAGE TO THE G-MAN
The actor, Michael Park, who plays Jack Snyder on the Guiding Light, is my cousin. He’s nicknamed the G-man because he is a member of the “good” family and is a cop. He’s not acting.
My grandfather, Nicholas De Rosa (the real St. Nick), is his great grandfather. His mother, Rosemary Park is my first cousin and is my age. She grew up in Canandaigua, New York where she taught in the local High School. The singing, dancing, and acting talent he possesses is rampant in the family. His (and my) Aunt Arlene make the Angels cry when she sings” Ave Maria”. Too bad for the world that she was more interested in raising her six kids with my Uncle Milt, (my Godfather) than chasing fame.
It’s OK though. She is very active at Top of The World in Clearwater Florida. She is involved in putting the entertainment together and no one misses a performance when she sings. No one.
The Met in New York has not heard it’s best voice yet.
When Michael was about fourteen, he spent some time down here in Clearwater, FL with my two oldest sons (Sam the magician and Tony the lawyer). They are all about the same age. My father told him then that he reminded him of Danny Thomas at the same age. Danny Thomas grew up in Rochester, New York, in the Italian ghetto where my grandfather had a Barber Shop. He used to pluck chickens across the street. He also taught the younger boys how to play ball and live right. My father recalls him always being entertaining. He was a bundle of energy that never stopped being “on”.
Michael was the same way. My father told him then that he would be a famous entertainer too. He is. He does Broadway shows, sings, dances, and lives right. He’s a natural.
I remember seeing a Danny Thomas movie where he played a wise guy. In one scene he is being dissed by someone, and says, “What do you think I am, a chicken plucker”.
I almost fell over when I heard that line the first time. I screamed, “Yes, you were a chicken plucker”. What a great inside joke. He must have loved that line.
My grandmother, Rose De Rosa watched her stories every day. She loved, “As The World Turns”. I know she would have had another stroke and died again if she knew he would be on it someday. What I don’t think she would have liked is how vapid and nonsensical her soaps have become.
They used to be a morality play meant to enhance society. Now characters routinely get away with crime and mayhem, and the G-man has been reduced to an idiot chasing a tramp. In real life Carly is an Angel and the families get together for joint vacations. Once they stayed at my Uncle Hank’s cottage on Canandaigua Lake. If they told the real story of those actors lives the soap would write itself. The right way.
His real life is so much better and so is he. What a shame the soap isn’t based on real American families that paid for their sins along the way nut managed to actually live happily ever after, like his family.
Grandma wants him to push for that or get out. It is evil what TV is doing now. Here is what TV should do:
Mass media generates mass money. The FCC erased the public from the money part of the equation in the 40s. The landmark Communications Act of 1934 began with good intentions. The latest Telecommunications Act of 1996 destroyed the last hope of equity and is heading to a monolith of propaganda for corporate oligarchs and political criminals.
Cash is the key to the problems; cash is the key to the solutions. It is inherent in the system as it is today that a few privileged groups become super-rich while “normal” people lose ground. It creates envy, greed and a lust for gold. The disparity between the income of hard working people is so great is discounts vital professions and injures the soul. Its effects on the political system alone are enough to want radical change BACK to original thinking. During WWII, the FCC froze everything and rewrote the rules. The commercial and propaganda value was apparent and too hard to resist. The public got sold out.
The mass-money mass-media produces could, and should, fund health and education. It may seem commie, but what we have now is worse. The revolutionary measure would solve several problems and cure our bodies and souls in the process. It is not commie, it is the ORIGINAL intent. What we have now is just plain criminal.
There really is no alternative. The present medical system is so corrupt, and causes so much horror and grief; the Marquis De Sade would wince.
Reagan’s FCC chairman, Mark Fowler, said, ”TV is just a toaster with pictures. It doesn’t need much regulation”. Nothing could be further from the truth. Since then it has been a giant trough for mega-media monopolies that threaten our democracy.
The Internet, or E-grapevine, is a force that hasn’t been appreciated for its potential to do what every government and tyrant fears most. Providing the masses, in real time, with information that exposes every horror and dirty trick since 1066. With pictures, sound, and interactive capabilities.
It is the revelation tyrants have always feared. They are the only ones with anything to lose. The poor already live in hell. The five billion wretched souls on this planet better get some hope for themselves or they will swarm like ants over the honey-pot the super-rich want all to themselves. A race to see who will be the first trillionaire had better not be won.
Radical times require radical change. Change will come anyway. This would be good change. The new model Bush spoke of in Britain will have to recognize realities like the ones above. It’s doable
Love ya', Mikey.
